Easy-to-Read: What it is and how it works

Easy-to-Read is a methodology designed to write or adapt and validate a text in an accessible way. This means that people with comprehension difficulties can understand what they read. Text accessibility guarantees that the message can be understood by a wide group of people.

Who benefits?

Everybody who has difficulties understanding a text will benefit from Easy-to-Read. These groups include people with intellectual disabilities and other developmental disorders, recent migrants who are not native speakers of Spanish, seniors, among others.

What do easy-to-read texts provide?

  1. The production of Easy-to-Read texts allows compliance with current national regulations. This opens a door for people with comprehension difficulties to exercise their right to access information and communication, which favors their social participation. In this way, Easy-to-Read texts facilitate the inclusion of people considering support needs and favoring the full citizen exercise of their rights, thanks to the full understanding of relevant social issues.
  2. Provides an effective tool to promote reading comprehension and to encourage reading in groups where access is reduced.
  3. Promotes autonomy in people who require different levels of support.
  4. Benefits institutions by making their messages clearer, reducing the level of support that people require to carry out any procedures and improving their communication.
  5. Allows institutions to fulfill their social role through the incorporation of inclusive technology responsible for rights.
